Government gives Southport Sainsburys Superstore ‘the go-ahead’

The Government has approved Southport’s controversial Meols Cop retail park Sainsbury’s superstore application. Town Centre Lib Dem Councillor Tony Dawson, who appeared at the Public Inquiry in opposition to the planned development, says:

“Last night at the Southport Area Committee, residents and councillors discussed the fact that Sefton Council do not want to create any kind of strategy for Southport or to engage with the people of Southport or their representatives in any meaningful manner to create a vibrant town with a vibrant town centre.

Now it would appear that the government similarly has no real concern for maintaining any form of retail centre in Southport – or indeed any serious town centre policy at all. We will be looking carefully at the detail of the report but it seems likely now that what happens on this site will be purely down to  Sainsbury’s judgment over whether it still wants to proceed in the present business environment.

Unless something is done, and done soon, Southport town centre will transform year-on-year into a mixture of residential and coffee shops and bars with the odd working shop and rather more empty ones. And let us be clear. Unless we, the people of Southport get together and go to work together on the matter, nothing will be done at all.”
