Budding golfers turned out in numbers to take part in free golf taster sessions organised by Sefton Council.

As part of the national ‘Get into Golf Month’ scheme, Southport Golf Links joined forces with Southport Pitch and Putt to offer the sessions during May.

Many parents brought their children along to try the free taster sessions which were well attended at both venues over four days.

John Murray, owner of Southport Pitch and Putt, said: “The great golfer Sir Henry Cotton who opened this facility in 1931 would certainly have a smile on his face to see all the youngsters having such a good time.

“Many of the parents who came with their children took up the challenge of having a go themselves and many stated they would be back which is great news.”

Declan Kearney, Sefton Council’s Senior Parks Officer, added: “This event has made people aware of the health benefits of getting out playing golf and the overall enjoyment of the sport.

“Such was the success, we will certainly look at running more golf themed events in the future.

“I would like to thank John and Billy Murray at the Pitch and Putt, Alan Bradshaw, PGA Golf Professional and Les Lucas, Park Golf Club junior organiser for giving up their own time to contribute in running this event over the four days.”
