Gin Talk in Southport raises more money for Parkinsons UK

The Rotary Club of Southport Links invited Damian Bond from the Birkdale Craft Distillery to give an after dinner talk on the creation of Birkdale Gin, following the recent publicity in the local press. Following an excellent meal in the Royal Clifton Hotel, Damian gave an introduction to the history of gin and how it evolved as a medicine in 3 stages, starting with European herbs and roots, then sweetened and made more drinkable with juniper and finally the addition of exotic spices from new spice trade with africa and the orient, which was controlled by 17th century Holland.

We then re-created the tasting event that chose the one of 5 blends of gin that became the favourite and Birkdale Gin. Interestingly the Rotary club favourite was a different blend. Not sure whether this says something about Rotary or the gin drinkers of Birkdale?

It was one of the more unusual and enjoyable Rotary nights for some time.

£50 was raised for charitable causes and donated to Parkinsons UK. Photo of Jeff MacCalman, past president of the club presenting Damian with the cheque. This brings the total to £300 raised for Parkinsons UK since the launch of Birkdale Gin on 4th February.

Birkdale Gin is available to buy in the Wine Rack, Weld Parade, Birkdale and available by the glass in the Wine Rack, the Barrel House, Villaggio Cucina and Fishermens Rest in Birkdale plus Jack & Gin in Burscough.
