Sefton Council’s Public Health Team is urging all young people to get their MMR jab at one of the many venues across the borough.

In a bid to make it as easy as possible to get your MMR jab, a number of community clinics are being held across the borough and the jab is also available from your local GP practice.

The following clinics are offering the MMR Jab for 11 to 18-year-olds from 2pm-4.30pm:  Bootle Health Centre 22 July, Southport Centre for Wellbeing 23 July, Formby Health Centre 24 July, Netherton Health Centre 25 July, Maghull Health Centre on 26 July, Netherton Health Centre 27 August and Southport Centre for Health and Wellbeing on 28 August.

Dr Janet Atherton, Sefton Council’s Director of Public Health, said: “We launched an MMR campaign in March to prevent future outbreaks. It has been really well supported by teachers, nurses, GPs and parents themselves and hundreds of young people across the borough have been vaccinated. There are still many more still at risk, so we now offering even more venues for vaccination through GP practices and community clinics.

“Many people think measles is an old disease but it is very current. Last year there was a large outbreak of measles in Merseyside and 90 Sefton children and young people have become ill with measles since January 2012. Measles is a dangerous disease. It can cause brain damage and even kill.

“Currently uptake of MMR among young children is very high with 92% getting two doses of the vaccine by their fifth birthday. However, many older children and teenagers missed out. An estimated 5,200 10-16 year olds in Sefton need one or two doses of MMR to be fully protected.

To support the national programme, a new Facebook page has been launched in conjunction with NHS Choices.
