It’s the second coming!

Having not so long ago finished entertaining us in Alan Ayckbourn’s darkly comic Snakes in the Grass at Southport’s Little Theatre, the award winning Too Friendly Theatre Company are deep in rehearsals for their next production. And it is fair to say, that it is perhaps as far removed from their previous fare as is possible. The well-renowned local company will present Oliver Lansley’s “Immaculate”. This is not a play for the easily offended or faint of heart!  The play is a hilarious (and often rude) imagining of what would happen to a modern day girl if she found out she was the bearer of an Immaculate Conception.  This is exactly what happens in this riotous play.  Mia finds she is six months pregnant but is adamant there has been no nocturnal fumbling which could have caused such an occurrence. Her shock is further heightened when the angel Gabriel appears at her door claiming the child is “one of theirs”. Needless to say, Mia is sceptical and things go from crazy to crazier when her effusive ex turns up, only to be followed by the King of the Damned Lucifer who also stakes a claim on the child. Add to this another suitor and a best friend terrified of babies and it all adds up to an unholy mess.

Director Cliff Gillies indicated that they play uses a lot of different dramatic styles which is what makes it so effective. “The whole thing is held together by a Greek Chorus who act as narrator, there are flashbacks and the characters chat to the audience as if they are in the living room with them”

With that in mind, the company decided to venture into a new location for the play which will be performed, for the first time, at The Bold Hotel on Lord Street. “The venue suits the play perfectly,” explains Mark Haygarth who plays Gabriel, “The room allows the audience to be close to the action which will make them feel like the characters are sharing this unique event with them”.

So, if you are looking for a hilarious night’s entertainment then book the babysitter and get down to The Bold Hotel. Immaculate will run from 17th to 19th September, tickets are just £8.

Tickets are available from the box office on 01704 808951, from The Bold reception or online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/toofriendly
