Merseyside Police can confirm that an investigation by the force’s Unity team is underway after a woman was raped in Southport on Tuesday night.

The incident is believed to have happened in Kings Gardens at around 9pm.

Patrols were alerted by a member of the public reporting that they had found a woman lying in nearby Talbot Street in a distressed state.

She was checked over by officers at the scene and is currently being supported by the force’s specialist rape investigation team, ‘Unity’.

It is believed that she had met her attacker for the first time earlier in the night at a local pub.

Detectives are carrying out extensive enquiries to identify and trace the man responsible.

Following the incident the offender ran off towards the Promenade.
Kings Gardens and part of the Promenade have been cordoned off for crime scene investigation work.
