Facts and fun on the menu at Southport Primary school healthy eating event

Both facts and fun were on the menu when children from three Southport primary schools took part in an event highlighting the importance of healthy eating and exercise recently.

The day was held at the recently opened Jump Warehouse trampoline centre at Slaidburn Industrial Estate, and organised in partnership with Stanley High School-based North Sefton School Games Organiser, Mike Smethurst.

Around 40 year 5 pupils were involved from Norwood Primary, St John’s Crossens Primary and Churchtown Primary in the north of the town.

The event included a theory workshop on healthy eating which looked at the importance of a balanced diet made up of the five food groups, and consuming the right amount of food and drink to maintain a healthy body weight.

Then for the practical part of the day the pupils – supported by Stanley High’s sports  leaders – were given the chance to learn about about the various paths to fitness by playing a variety of games on the centre’s trampolines.

Mike Smethurst of Stanley High School commented: “This was a great event which gave the children an alternative opportunity to take part in physical activity, rather than focusing on more traditional sports.

“All the activities were really enjoyable which meant that they kept the attention of the participants throughout.”

Jump Warehouse Manager, Shelley Ball, added: “This was the first event of this type that we’ve run and we’re delighted at how well it went.

“It shows that the Jump Warehouse is a great venue to educate young people about exercise and healthy eating, while having fun at the same time.”
