Energy bill rises predicted

UNISON, the UK’s largest public sector union, is calling on the government and energy industry to set minimum standards for home insulation, to help families – especially those on low incomes – cut their energy bills.

Energy bills are set to rise by many hundreds of pounds, piling even more pressure onto hard-pressed families. This rise would be cushioned in homes with decent insulation.

The union is warning that the government’s current system of grants for providing home insulation is too complex and does not reach those on low incomes who need it most.

Matthew Ley, UNISON national officer, said:

“Boosting home insulation is crucial to help families cut their spiralling energy bills and reduce their energy consumption. But all too often, the help that’s out there doesn’t reach those who need it most.

“The UK’s wealthiest households are the most energy efficient. Whilst these households are able to make the most of the savings that home insulation can provide, those on low incomes cannot. What these families need is for the government and the energy industry to get together and put in place minimum standards for home insulation that will help households across the board.”
