Email to OTS New Editor ‘SOUTHPORT CYCLISTS RED LIGHTS’ May 25th, 2014 admin Latest News Shares Comments Email to OTS New Editor ‘SOUTHPORT CYCLISTS RED LIGHTS’ i recently contacted you regarding cyclists and red lights. I have been watching the comments in recent days and while i don’t want to register and comment on line but i would like to say that some of them are missing the point with the comments about cars and Motorcyclists going through red lights. Yes i agree with the fact that there are bad drivers as well as cyclists, but drivers of cars and motorcylists generally go through red lights as they change, not undertake and go thorough after the lights have been on red for a significant time. Car drivers and Motorcyclists are regulated and contribute to the upkeep of the road with tax and are covered for accidents with insurance, they have to have a valid licence and pass a DSA test. Cyclist have to do none of this. Also significant sums of money are invested in cycle ways and refuges at traffic lights which many cyclists refuse to use preferring to cycle on the road. I would like to point out that I am not totally against cyclists i am actually a ROSPA certified cycling proficiency instructor from when my children were at school where i used to volunteer as an instructor, so I have some knowledge about cycling although I choose not to use one. It is true the few taint views on the many and i have no problem with people on cycles who use cycles to travel to and from work or leisure activities and obey the rules of the road, its the people who use the roads irresponsibly as a race track to travel as far as they can in the shortest time in the name of keeping fit.
