ED MILIBAND’S election strategists have written off almost a third of Labour’s original target seat list, party insiders have revealed to the Sunday Times.

Labour’s strategic team are now focusing on only around 75 constituencies, after a week which has shown that their Leader was kept away from the Scottish referendum campaign because he was so unpopular with voters. Southport was not in the original list: it is Labour’s worst-performing metropolitan constituency in the UK.

Constituencies considered unwinnable by the Labour central team will be denied added resources such as staff or volunteers and direct mail shots to voters. Although the town used to have Conservative MPs, Southport is not on the Tory ‘target’ list either, which is why it did not even have a parliamentary candidate appointed until the last minute.
