Council Tax Reduction Scheme Consultation in Sefton December 11th, 2013 admin Latest News Shares Comments Council Tax Reduction Scheme Consultation Sefton Council is running a month long consultation to gauge views on a revised Council Tax Reduction Scheme for 2014/15. Sefton’s Council Tax Reduction Scheme is being reconsidered in the light of the Government’s proposed changes to pensions and welfare benefits. The consultation is seeking views on whether the applicable amounts and personal allowances for non-pensioner households should be ‘uprated’ using Department for Work and Pensions rates. This should avoid working age claimants receiving less Council Tax support. The proposed changes will not affect customers who have reached their state pension age who continue to have their Council Tax Reduction calculated on rules set by the Government. At the moment there are more than 16,552 working age residents in the borough who are affected by the scheme. Sefton Council is required to consult on any changes to the scheme and welcomes any views on these proposals. The draft scheme is available to view on the Sefton Council website or at the two One Stop Shops and a consultation on the proposed new scheme is now underway. This runs until Monday, January 6 and to get involved go to www.sefton.gov.uk/counciltax. Cllr Paul Tweed, Cabinet Member Corporate Services and Performance, said: “Unfortunately, in real terms, our funding by Government has been reduced by £114m since 2010. We have also seen a cut in the amount of Council Tax support given to us this year of about £3.7m. “However, we will always do our best to help those on lower incomes and want to ensure that anyone who has an interest in this proposed revision of the scheme has an opportunity to have their say. “Your views and the information provided will be analysed and will then form part of a report when we have to make a decision on the Council Tax Reduction Scheme for 2014/15. “This affects thousands of people in the borough so please take the time to have your say.” By law each financial year Sefton Council must consider whether to revise or replace its local Council Tax Reduction Scheme. Any revision must be made by January 31 before it starts in the new financial year. To review the proposed revision, and the draft scheme for 2014/15, go to www.sefton.gov.uk/counciltax or call 0845 140 0845 for further help.
