Council Services in Southport at Christmas

Similar to previous years, Sefton Council will provide essential services only throughout Christmas and New Year – as most staff are required to take unpaid leave as part of a series of cost-saving measures.

As a result of the unpaid leave, to be taken on December 24, 27, 30 and 31, most council buildings will be closed contributing to a saving of around £800,000.

This saving, made up of staff wages over the four days and other running costs, will help to balance this year’s budget.

On these dates, services that will continue to operate include: social care services for adults and children, a limited street cleaning service, commercial waste collection, limited specialist transport and urgent highways issues, including gritting.

Some Sefton Council run leisure centres will be open at varying times during these dates and users are advised to check for opening times.

Cllr Peter Dowd, Leader of Sefton Council, said: “During the Christmas and New Year period we will continue to operate the essential services that help our most vulnerable residents.

“However, in order to help generate savings, again this year most services and buildings will be closed for longer than normal over Christmas and New Year.

“Throughout the year staff have had their pay reduced in order to take four days unpaid leave. Other savings come from the reduced need for heating, lighting and running buildings, equipment and vehicles.

“We continue to make such savings in all services due to a reduction in Government funding. This shut-down period helps contribute to that.”

An automated phone service for some payments will be operating during this period on 0845 140 0845, as well as an online payment system.
