A Consultant Psychiatrist in Lancashire has been awarded an important regional award for his work in mental health.
Professor Nusrat Husain from Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded the Clinical Research Role Model of the Year award at the prestigious North West Coast Research and Innovation Awards 2017.
Nusrat’s nomination described his dedication to addressing inequalities in access to health care and clinical insightfulness as a research leader committed to addressing mental health inequalities in the UK. His research into depression and self-harm which disproportionately affects low income British South Asian women was particularly highlighted as having a powerful impact.

Professor Nusrat Husain, a Consultant Psychiatrist at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It is a huge honour for myself, the Trust and for Lancashire to receive this award at the North West Coast Research and Innovation Awards 2017. My work along with the very hard work and dedication of my team over the last 10 years focused on addressing the health inequalities within the Lancashire region. We have received a lot of support from the community to take this work forward. I hope this will inspire other clinicians to support and contribute to research which helps us in improving the lives of our diverse communities. I look forward to continuing this valuable work with the Trust.”
Dr Liz Mear, Chief Executive of the Innovation Agency, said: “The North West Coast is rich in talent and collaborations and our awards have thrown a light on outstanding individuals and organisations leading the way in research and innovation. These are people who go over and above what is asked of them, to make a real difference to people’s lives.”
The Clinical Research Team at Lancashire Care was also among finalists at the awards in the Clinical Research Team or Site of the Year Category and also joint-finalists with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals in the Delivering Research in Collaboration Category.
In November last year, Nusrat received the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Academic Researcher of the Year Award 2016 in recognition of his excellent work in improving access for marginalised communities to mental health care. In addition to his role as Consultant Psychiatrist at Lancashire Care, Nusrat is also the Lead for Lancashire Care’s Culture and International Mental Health research Group. He is also Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Research in Global Mental Health at the Division of Psychology and Mental Health, University of Manchester.
The awards are in their second year and were held at Hilton Hotel, Liverpool, on 9 February to reward and celebrate success for the excellent work being undertaken across the region in relation to clinical research and innovation within healthcare. At the event’s core is the desire to demonstrate how clinical research and innovation efforts have had an impact on patient care across the North West Coast and to showcase ideas.
The North West Coast Research and Innovation Awards were jointly organised by the Innovation Agency, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network North West Coast, and NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) North West Coast.
