Cllr Simon Shaw condemns closure of Southport Police Station Custody Suite August 30th, 2013 admin Latest News Shares Comments Cllr Simon Shaw condemns closure of Southport Police Station Custody Suite The recent decision, revealed on OTS News earlier this week http://www.otsnews.co.uk/southport-police-station-custody-suite-closes/ , to close the Custody Suite at Southport Police Station has been attacked by Birkdale Lib Dem councillor Simon Shaw, a member of the Merseyside Police Panel. Until just a few days ago the Southport Custody Suite was used between Fridays and Sundays, meaning that any people arrested at the weekend could be dealt with locally. The nearest Custody Suite is now at Bootle’s Copy Lane Police Station. This means that Southport police officers arresting suspects are taken away from the local area for much longer. As a member of the Merseyside Police Panel, Cllr Shaw is one of 10 councillors from across the County whose job it is to monitor the work of Labour’s Jane Kennedy, the local Police Commissioner. Cllr Shaw said: “I am most concerned about this decision, and also the way in which it was done. There appears to have been no consultation about it. I cannot even find any trace of the decision on Jane Kennedy’s website.” The decision to close Southport’s Custody Suite prejudges the outcome of the current Estates Strategy Review according to Cllr Shaw. He voiced concern that assurances of full consultation given by Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy have not been kept. “Only last month the Police Panel met with Jane Kennedy to express our concern about the way is which the Estates Strategy Review is being undertaken. The Panel issed a formal report which included reference to a specific concern that ‘the operational use of specific facilities had already changed in advance of the detail of the strategy being finalised’. Then this happens at Southport Police Station Custody Suite. It is simply unacceptable.” The full Police Panel report, including section 8 “Estates Strategy” is available at: http://councillors.knowsley.gov.uk/ecSDDisplay.aspx?NAME=PCP%20Response%20to%20the%20Annual%20Report%202012%2f13%20-%2024%20Jul&ID=1404&RPID=1974696&sch=doc&cat=13305&path=13305&StyleType=standard&StyleSize=none Cllr Shaw added: “Bearing in mind that Jane Kennedy gave a clear commitment about public consultation on such issues I feel that Southport residents have been badly let down by the Police Commissioner.
