CCTV appeal after £6k worth of binoculars stolen from Burscough wildlife exhibition

POLICE have issued a CCTV image of a man they need to trace in connection with the theft of a pair of binoculars from a Wildlife Exhibition in Burscough.

The theft took place around 2.30pm on Sunday 24th November at the Viewpoint Optics display at a wetland centre at Martin Mere when someone, possibly acting with accomplice, has removed a pair of Swarovski 10×32 EL binoculars worth £1,620 whilst the salesman was distracted.

The man police want to speak to is described as being aged in his 50s with a grey beard and was wearing a grey circular hat, waterproof jacket and glasses.

Officers are also investigating three other shoplifting offences that occurred at the same event over the same weekend.

On Saturday 23rd November two other pairs of Swarovski binoculars, models 10×50 EL and 8.5×42 EL, valued at £2,010 and £1,850 were stolen from the Viewpoint Optics stall and one pair of Zeiss 8.42 FLT binoculars worth £1,329 were stolen from the LCE Group stall.

Police believe these offences are likely to be linked and are appealing for information.

PC Daniel Gardner said: “I would urge anybody that recognises this man from the CCTV image to contact Lancashire Police in 101 quoting crime reference CJ1304947. The CCTV is from a GoPro camera and is of excellent quality so I am confident someone will know who this man is.

“The stolen Swarovski 10×32 EL binoculars are a specialist item and one of the most expensive binoculars available to buy so the offender appears to have knowledge of the products on the stall.”

Anybody with any information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or on-line at

No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.
