Merseyside companies join the campaign to grow international trad

Clive Drinkwater, Regional Director for UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) North West, will today welcome the new round of Export Champions 2014 at an event being held during of Export Week, a national campaign led by UKTI to increase UK exports and grow the economy.

Six companies from Merseyside – some of whom were also Export Champions in 2013 – will join the group of successful international firms across the region being recruited by UKTI North West to help and advise new companies on their export journey.

The role of the Export Champions is to offer peer to peer support in addition to the wide range of individually tailored professional services available from the UKTI team, as well as promoting exports generally.

Mr Drinkwater will address the group at an event in Preston to congratulate them on their achievements so far and to discuss how best to encourage new firms to win overseas business in 2014.

The Export Champions programme is unique to the North West, and is part of a drive to create 1000 new exporters for the region. The group includes both large and small companies from a range of sectors, covering all parts of the North West.

New to the Merseyside Export Champions is Glen Dimplex based in Prescot,  manufacturer of domestic and commercial appliances.

Chief Executive Denver Hewlett has been with the company for 17 years, and 5 years ago decided to make exporting part of the businesses’ growth strategy.   The company worked with UKTI in the North West and commissioned Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) reports into several different countries to increase their knowledge of the markets and to understand the adaptations needed to make the products suitable for international sale.

Accepting the offer to become an Export Champion for 2014, Denver Hewlett said,

“We are very pleased to become export champions – UKTI have helped us a lot and we are delighted to be working with them to encourage other companies to look at exporting in order to grow their sales.

“We did a lot of research and prepared thoroughly for new export markets, putting the right infrastructure in place, making sure we met different technical standards and checking the approvals process for each market.  As a result we now sell to 15 markets including Australia, Russia, the Netherlands, France, Malaysia, Ireland and New Zealand.

“Exports now make up 10% of our sales, and we are looking to expand this to 20% in the future.”

Clive Drinkwater said,

“In the North West our Export Champions are an integral part of our strategy, which is why I am delighted to have persuaded more firms to join us in the drive to increase overseas sales and grow GDP in the North West.

“Export Champions are all businesses who will inspire and motivate those new to international trade, both by promoting the benefits of export via their own successes and by sharing knowledge and experience.

“I am looking forward to attending this event and addressing such a wide range of businesses both large and small, who are all willing to help contribute to the prosperity of the North West, via their own companies and with the help they have pledged to give to others.

“As diverse as these companies are, they all have one thing in common – their positive attitude and pro-active approach to seeking new export orders which make them inspirational ‘Export Champions’ who will become a beacon to  inspire non-exporters to get started and to encourage new exporters to do more.”

Other Export Champions in Merseyside include Liverpool based Charge Point Technology Ltd, which manufacture containment valves for the pharmaceutical sector and has won three Queen’s Award for International Trade, ATG Access Ltd, which manufactures everything from residential bollards to high-tech, anti-terrorist systems, Southport based Inciner8 which sells waste incinerators and recycling equipment in 55 countries worldwide, Clarke Energy from  Liverpool and Innospec Ltd based in Ellesmere Port.
