Battle of the bands competition launches Southport Festival 2017!

1st February 2017

Southport Festival and Sandgrounder radio are looking for exceptional local live acts acts to perform a live session with a chance of winning the opportunity to perform a live set at Southport Festival 2017!

After a hugely successful debut in 2016, the Southport Festival is back and bigger for 2017!  Taking place on the weekend of the 5-7th May the festival will be an explosion of art, culture and music throughout the town centre.  From poetry to interactive art, literature to comedy and live music throughout the town.

This year, the festival is launching a ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition in conjunction with Sandgrounder Radio.  Talented, up and coming live acts from Southport are being asked to send in their music and the top ten will then be invited into the studio to perform a session live on air.  Listeners will then be able to vote for their favourite acts via social media, and the top three acts will be given the opportunity to perform a live set as part of Southport Festival in May.

Sandgrounder DJ Neil Newton launched the competition on his breakfast show this morning “Southport has so many great bands, singers and live acts and we have always prided ourselves on being part of the community and championing the talent here with live sessions.  We are thrilled to be able to be part of the festival and really give some superb acts exposure and an opportunity like this.  We can’t wait to hear some of the amazing music Southport is making!”

The festival, commissioned and funded by Southport BID and Sefton Council and is put together and managed by a group of passionate local community members, including musicians, comedian, artists and teams from the Council and Southport BID.  Last year over 150,000 people were in Southport during the festival weekend.

A representative from the Festival planning committee says the competition is a great platform for local talent “We are excited about the competition for 2017 as we very much want to see the festival showcase the best of Southport’s art and culture to the region and get local talent into our amazing venues.  It is a superb opportunity for an upcoming band to gain exposure to new audiences and for us to make highlight just how much talent there is here!”

Acts are being asked to submit an MP3 of their music to bands@sandgrounderradio.co.uk and 10 of the best will be selected to perform live on the breakfast show in the run up to the festival.
