Police in Southport have had  numerous reports of pickpocketing in M&S today (Thursday 8 January 2015)

Officers say in the last three months thefts in the town centre have doubled with big outlets such as Asda, Marks and Spencer and Sainsbury’s among the hotspots.

It is believed to be the work of teams of at least two people who often target the elderly. One districts the victim as another dips into their bag.

A southport police officer quoted:

“Its rife at the moment. If shoppers are carrying a bag, make sure that it is firmly closed and can’t be tampered with. People should keep an eye on their purse or wallet and purchases while out shopping and never leave them unattended.

Shoppers should never carry large sums of cash, and wherever possible pay by debit or credit card and they should make sure their credit or debit cards are within their view.

People should always keep cheque books and cards apart and never carry pin numbers.”
