Arlene flies the flag on International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia

On Friday 17th May Arlene is marking the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia by joining with the Lesbian & Gay Foundation in the North West and flying the LGBT flag on her facebook and twitter accounts.

Arlene said: “We have made some significant advances in tackling homophobia and transphobia over recent years but there are still 80 countries around the world where loving someone of the same sex is illegal and in nine of those countries can even result in the death penalty.”

“That is why it is important that we use today to speak out, celebrate the achievements made and shine a light on the discrimination that still remains, giving hope to those still living in fear.”

On the day the European Parliament will be communicating widely on LGBT rights and homophobia through its website, on Facebook and on Twitter #IDAHO.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights will publish the results of their survey into hate crime and discrimination experienced by over 93,000 LGBT people across Europe – the largest survey ever of its kind.

Arlene added: “Over 50% of respondents to the survey reported that they had felt discriminated against due to their sexuality over the last 12 months. Proving that although we have come a long way in the European Union we still have a long way to go before LGBT people experience true equality and are free from discrimination.”
