The incident happened between approximately 10am and 10.15am on Tuesday 5 May when the victim was at his home address on Ashfields and heard what he thought was the sound of his back gate banging in the wind.

The victim left the house via the back door and headed towards the gate where he was confronted by a man who stabbed him in his torso.

The victim sustained minor injuries to his abdomen which required hospital treatment.

The offender is described as a white male of average build with scruffy hair and stubble. He was wearing a dark jacket, dark gloves and dark coloured trousers.

DS Diane Higham of Skelmersdale CID said: “Thankfully the victim in this incident sustained minor injuries to his abdomen which are not life threatening. We have launched an investigation into what happened and enquiries are underway to trace the man responsible for this attack.

“We believe the offender may have been trying to break into the property and I would urge residents to remain vigilant and ensure their homes are secure. I would also like to reassure members of the local community that we have stepped up patrols in the area.

“If anybody saw any suspicious activity nearby or thinks they may have any information that could assist with our investigation I would urge them to contact us as soon as possible.”
