Powerflushing – Bring new life into old radiators

It is not always necessary to replace old radiators. A central heating system chemically cleaned and flushed out with a high power machine will improve system circulation and efficiency.

A further chemical added to protect the system, along with thermostats and a magnetic filter fitted, will prolong the systems life and efficiency.

A powerflush is the most sure way to clean the system pipework, as well as the radiators which may also be taken off and manually flushed outside.

The tell tale signs that your system may require flushing are:

Cold spots on radiators or cold at the bottom, hot at the top,

Frequently having to bleed/release air from radiators.

Noise/kettling from boiler.

Repeated pump failures,

Gas bills increasing,

Dirty/black water coming from air vents when you bleed them.

These symptoms can indicate that your system has circulation and flow problems resulting from internal corrosion and the build up of rust, sludge and limescale.

To validate boiler manufacturer’s warrentees, they insist that systems must be thoroughly cleaned and flushed out, to almost like tap water.

The best way to ensure this by chemical treatment and powerflushing.

Save up to £235 a year with a new boiler and controls

By replacing an old G rated boiler with a new high efficiency condensing boiler and improving your heating controls, you will significantly cut your home’s carbon dioxide emissions and could save as much as £235 a year or up to a quarter on your heating bills straight away and up to 1,300kg of CO2 year, according to Energy Saving Trust.

Boilers are rated according to their efficiency in converting fuel to heat as a percentage. This rating is called SEDBUK – Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK.

SEDBUK ratings are from A to G, A-rated boilers being more than 90% efficient. If your boiler is 15 years old or more then it could be a G rated boiler.

Compare the efficiency of different boilers at

The current lifespan of a boiler is around 15 years and fitting an A rated high efficiency boiler with the correct heating and hot water controls can make a huge difference to your heating bills over time.

A high efficiency condensing boiler works on the principle of recovering as much as possible of the waste heat which is normally wasted from the flue of a conventional (non-condensing) boiler. High efficiency condensing boilers convert 86% or more of their fuel into heat, compared to 65% for old G rated boilers.

Heating controls will keep your home at a comfortable temperature, making it warm when you want it but switching off when you don’t. They include: a programmer, a room thermostat, a combined programmable room thermostat, a cylinder thermostat and Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs).

Below are typical savings which can be achieved by replacing boilers with new A rated condensing models and installing a full set of heating controls, according to Energy Saving Trust.

Get your appliances safety checked every year!

Badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.

Protect yourself from the dangers by following these simple steps:

–        Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances

–        Get your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year

–         Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm

–        Check for warning signs such as lazy yellow flames or black marks or stains around the appliance.

–         Know the six main signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.

It is strongly reccomended by the HSE and Gas Safe Register that you have your gas appliances checked for safety at least once a year.

According to the Health and Safety Executive statistics, around 20 people a year in the UK die from Carbon Monoxide (CO) produced by gas appliances and flues that have not been  properly installed, maintained, or that are poorly ventillated.

Exposure to carbon monoxide over a period of time can also cause other serious long term health problems such as brain damage.

Gas Safe Register

Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely and legally on gas appliances.

By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. It replaced CORGI.

The Gas Safe Register makes sure the engineers on the Register are safe by inspecting the gas work they have carried out.

As Gas Safe registered engineers you can feel safe in the knowledge that we are competent and qualified to work safely and legally with gas.

By using a Gas Safe registered engineer you are protecting yourself and your family from incorrectly fitted, fixed and serviced gas appliances.

These are a major cause of lethal carbon monoxide poisoning, and can also lead to gas leaks, fires and expl

Always ask for our Gas Safe Register ID card and check the back of the card to make sure we are qualified for the work you need.
