This week, not far from St. Andrews 7 year old Max Matshall took on 60 of the worlds best 7 year old golfers from all over the world. Max qualified for the US Kids European Junior Championships last year, when he was only 6.

This week he played 3 9 hole rounds at Longniddry Golf Club on the, North east coast of Scotland.

In windy, bouncy conditions, with deep bunkers Max scored rounds of 44, 46 and 45 to finish 37th in the world class field.

Max had his dad, local golf pro Norman Marshall as caddie. The caddie was in serious trouble during practice round one when Max s favourite putter fell out of the bag and was missing when the pair arrived at the first green.

Following a trip to the pro shop and the purchase of a new putter, Max let out a cheer when he spotted his old favourite lying in the rough.

The event attracted 550 junior golfers to 5 courses in the Gullane area that hosted the event.

The opening ceremony was held at Gosford House with Highland games on the Monday.

The tournament was played over the following 3 days.

Max is the youngest ever member at southport old links where he always receives a warm and friendly welcome from the members.
